Kechena, a Thoroughbred mare (a Secretariat granddaughter rescued off the
track), lay down 23 hours after giving birth. Her foal, Sahali,
walked over and lay down beside her. Diane, who had fallen in love
with the baby and was watching pretty much full time) ran for the camera
and was able to take this breathtaking image (pre-digital, it was the last
on a roll of film!) when they actually cuddled. Diane occasionally, and respectfully, refers to this image as her "Equine Madonna and Child" because it symbolizes that bond, that divine love that flows between a mother and her baby, no matter which species. "I literally got goose bumps when I took it," Diane says. "It wasn't just that I knew I'd captured an incredible moment, but also that I was so blessed to be allowed to witness it." Kechena and Sahali are still together, 15 years later. Kechena, at 22, still looks good even though the grey is poking through and her back is beginning to sway. They were allowed to self-wean and watching Kechena teach Sahali the ways of the equine world was a highlight for those who watched. The pair have a home with Diane, as part of the family, for as long as they live. |
